On October 15, 2026, Mistral announced Timestral, its first family of time-series foundation models in four sizes (5M, 28M, 123M, 209M parameters) with a 32,768-timestep context and 21-quantile probabilistic forecasts that run on CPU. The 209M model ranks first among pretrained zero-shot models on GIFT-Eval, TIME and fev-bench, beating larger models such as TimesFM-3 and Chronos-2 siblings.

Why it matters

A small CPU-only open-weights family beating much larger dedicated forecasting models signals that frontier-model capacity is moving out of pure text into cheap, deployable time-series infrastructure.

Importance: 3/5

notable release (major version, significant open-weights drop, or regulatory shift)
