Modular makes the MAX inference stack source-available under a permissive license
Modular
On October 22 Modular released MAX 26.7 with source available for the graph compiler, runtime, and hardware backends under a permissive new license that allows commercial use without fees or royalties. Ship-ready implementations for NVIDIA, AMD, Apple Silicon, and CPUs are included as reference backends developers can inspect, modify, and extend.
Why it matters
It turns a closed commercial inference runtime into something kernel and backend engineers can fork, the same opening llama.cpp and vLLM gave the serving layer.
Importance: 3/5
commercial inference runtime moves to a source-available licence
